In need of a defensive upgrade, the Cardinals returned to the defensive lineman pool to select Rashard Lawrence IDL from LSU. The 6’2″ 208 pounder has good hands, strength, and motor and will add good linear run-stuffing and bull-rushing ability to the interior of the Arizona line.
Lawrence is a run-stuffing specialist, good on the linear blocks, strong, with good, strong, heavy hands. He’s not really nimble, quick-footed, or good laterally or on the move. He’s not twitchy, doesn’t get upfield that well, or create much disruption.
But what he does he does really well. He is a run-stuffer in the box, doesn’t get moved off his blocks much, and wins real estate in the middle. He is a perfect fit for running downs and will solidify the Cards line in one of its main weaknesses.
Rashard Lawrence bringing the stout
Kyle Crabbs said of Rashard Lawrence: “Rashard Lawrence projects as a starting interior defensive lineman at the NFL level. Lawrence has likable anchor ability, some pleasant reps in 2-gap situations and a low center of gravity to hold the point of attack.
“He’s not overly dynamic as a pass rusher and struggles to gain ground with consistency into gaps, his lack of explosive speed will restrict him here to some degree. But as an early down run defender, Lawrence will bring stout play and should be considered an asset.”
Lawrence fills an area of immediate need and will add good presence and depth to the unit with the potential to develop into a more consistent pass-rushing presence.
Welcome to Arizona Rashard Lawrence!
