Former Houston Texans DE JJ Watt has announced he is signing with the Cardinals on Twitter.
Speculation had been mounting over the last few days with 15 teams originally said to be in the hunt for the all-star edge rusher. Ian Rapoport reporting that the deal is 2-years and $31-million dollars, with $23-million guaranteed. The deal makes Watt the 9th highest-paid defensive end in the NFL.
JJ WATT IS A DIFFERENCE MAKER
While JJ Watt may be coming towards the latter stages of his career the soon to be 32-year-old adds much needed experience, and production to a unit that struggled at times in 2020. With FA Hasson Reddick expected to depart, the Cardinals had to replace their number one sack producer from 2020 and they have pulled out a master stroke with the addition of JJ Watt. Watt will also represent an upgrade over Reddick against the run. Reddick registered 12.5 sacks in 2020, with 5 coming in one game against the NY Giants.
The Cardinals ranked 9th on scoring defense in 2020 and will be hoping that Watt can push the defense over the top to make them genuine contenders in 2021.
